MANA
Operations
The Mana mine is SEMAFO’s newest mine. Construction of the Mana mine was completed in 14 months, with commercial production declared in the second quarter of 2008. The Mana plant is a highly computerized, technologically advanced facility.
As part of our commitment to limit our environmental footprint, construction of the site was carefully planned and executed. The main road was designed and built to serve as an airstrip and trees were conscientiously spared during the erection of housing for the local villagers and the mining camp.
During its first three months of operations, April, May and June 2008, Mana produced 17,200 ounces of gold using the 2,000 tonne-per-day ball mill.
SEMAFO successfully commissioned the new 4,000 tonne-per-day ball mill during the third quarter of 2008 and the design throughput was reached at the beginning of September.
2008
The year 2008 represents a series of achievements for the Mana project.
For the year ended December 31, 2008, a total of 902,100 tonnes of ore and 9,111,400 tonnes of waste material were extracted from the Wona and Nyafé pits, resulting in a stripping ratio of 10:1.
During the year 2008, the Company processed 773,700 tonnes of ore at an average grade of 3.62 g/t.
Cash operating cost for the year was $384 per ounce.
Detailed engineering studies to increase plant capacity were completed.
Exploration
The main objective of the 2008 exploration program was to increase reserves as well as measured and indicated resources and the further development of the two high potential Wona zones discovered in 2007. More specifically, we focused on the NE extension of the Wona deposit and its mineralization lode.
Our program was a success as the Company added over 50,000 ounces in reserves from the NE extension of Wona. Moreover, inferred resources from Wona at-depth were better defined enabling increased total Mana indicated resources to 11,297,000 tonnes at 2.52g/t from 2,709,200 tonnes at 2.13g/t last year. We have also added 18,000 ounces in reserves at an average grade of 3.6 g/t from the Filon 67 pit.
Overall in 2008, we executed over 8,500 meters of at-depth core drilling and 7,600 meters of RC drilling at Wona NE, and over 1,700 meters of RC drilling on the Filon 67 ore body.
